ACEEE developed this toolkit during participation in the FY22 U.S. Department of Transportation Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Program. It is a resource for local governments, community organizations, and other groups that are interested in expanding public engagement to support pedestrian safety goals. The toolkit provides step-by-step guidance for how to conduct a walk audit, an activity where community members and local government officials gather to walk along a roadway and document observations about pedestrian safety and comfort. It also includes three templates for walk audit observation forms that can be adapted to different local contexts.
