Industrial Heat

Modernizing industrial heat systems is a win for resiliency, safety, and emissions.

Heating accounts for more than 70% of all energy consumed by the industrial sector—and over 90% of that heat is currently generated by fossil fuels. A growing suite of technologies, including industrial heat pumps, electric boilers, thermal batteries, and other electrified systems, can help reduce fuel use, replace aging boiler infrastructure, and improve overall system efficiency. Broad deployment of these technologies across industrial sectors could reduce the energy required to generate process heat by up to one-third. 

ACEEE works to help the market realize this potential. In many cases, the primary barriers to industrial electrification are economic and infrastructural rather than technical. ACEEE works with manufacturers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to develop programs, policies, and market pathways that can reduce these barriers and accelerate deployment. The result can be lower energy use, air pollutants, and emissions as well as reduced operating costs and a more modern and competitive industrial sector.
