Building Policies and Codes

Building codes govern the efficiency of new construction—but the majority of buildings that will exist in 2050 have already been built. For these existing buildings, cities and states use other policies to promote efficiency. These include benchmarking and transparency policies that require owners to measure and report energy consumption, and building performance standards that require owners to meet increasingly ambitious energy or emissions reduction targets over time. ACEEE works with states, cities, and utilities to research and develop best practices for a range of policies that will ensure efficient, affordable, and clean buildings in the years to come.
