The Program Manager, Transmission will lead GridLab’s technical assistance work, in support of state and regional clean energy advocates on various grid issues. In many cases, this will include contracting and managing independent grid experts to complete the technical analysis needed to support advocates’ efforts. Technical assistance includes modeling, analysis, expert testimony, and policy support in integrated resource planning, transmission planning, resource adequacy, grid modernization, and electrification proceedings. This role will lead engagement in eastern ISO/RTOs, NERC, and FERC activities in support of clean energy and grid transformation, long-range multi-value transmission planning, power systems modeling, and grid operating practices.
In partnership with the Senior Program Manager, this role will spearhead industry-transforming initiatives, including FERC Order 1920 implementation, large load interconnection best practices, deployment of Advanced Transmission Technologies, and novel powerflow analysis techniques and software.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
The Program Manager is responsible for managing transmission system technical assistance projects, supporting the organization’s strategic thought leadership, developing new areas of expertise, and leading GridLab initiatives.
- Lead GridLab technical assistance projects, managing members of our expert network, and leveraging their own technical expertise.
- Participate in regional and interregional transmission planning strategy discussions and provide technical support as needed to support goals of expanding transmission capacity.
- Assist and lead efforts to generate education and outreach materials, such as issue briefers, academic papers, and industry blogs.
- Expand GridLab’s “network of experts”, drawing on industry experience and relationships to bring in new expertise and expand technical service offerings.
- Work with GridLab’s field of experts to provide technical support in these and other content areas: Regional Long-Range Multi-Value Transmission Planning; Integrated Resource Planning and Certificate of Public Necessity Support; Technology Education; and Generator Interconnection
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Education in engineering or a related field.
- Expertise in energy technology, markets, and policy.
- Experience managing and/or performing power system analysis.
- Experience scoping and managing engineers and other experts.
- Excellent writing, presentation and communication skills.
- Self-starter who can work with the GridLab team to set and execute priorities.
- Excellent time management, project design and management skills.
- Passion for clean energy with an appreciation for linking technical knowledge with policy and advocacy.
- Experience in transmission and bulk power system modeling tools.
- Advanced degrees in engineering or other technical fields.
- Experience with project-based work or consulting roles, specifically with direct client interaction.
- Experience with the US Department of Energy and/or National Labs.
- Familiar with NERC reliability standards.
- Significant experience with one or more ISO/RTOs.
- Experience working with clean energy advocacy groups, policymakers, or regulators.
- Knowledgeable with publications and technical reports, conference presentations/proceedings.
- Experience with expert testimony and PUC processes.
Location:
GridLab’s headquarters are in Berkeley, CA, but the role can be remote with 10-20% travel in the domestic US. The role will actively participate in meetings remotely that occur as early as 9 am in the Eastern US Timezone.
Salary: $95,000-$145,000 salary per year.
