This brief discusses the benefits and challenges of repurposing electric vehicle (EV) batteries for stationary storage after they have completed their first life in a vehicle. As EVs reach the end of their life, their batteries often retain upwards of 80% of their original capacity and can be repurposed for stationary storage. EV battery repurposing extends the useful life of the battery, reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the need for new mining.
This brief is based on interviews with key industry and policy stakeholders and presents takeaways from a recent workshop on the topic. Many policy opportunities exist at the federal and state levels including, most importantly, policies that give battery repurposers better access to essential battery data.
