ACEEE, a leading national research organization based in Washington, DC, seeks a building decarbonization analyst to research energy efficiency and decarbonization in buildings and homes and to contribute to ACEEE’s work on energy code and standard development. Position Description:
The analyst will be a member of ACEEE’s Buildings program, providing research, analysis, outreach, and support to multi-sector research projects to scale up energy efficiency as the basis for decarbonization in buildings. ACEEE’s Buildings program covers a variety of topics: zero-energy and zero-carbon new construction, retrofits, embodied carbon, affordable housing, electrification, and advanced building technologies. The analyst’s work will focus on cross-cutting approaches to reducing greenhouse gas emissions that requires collaboration with others at ACEEE. Specific areas of interest include the building-grid interface, energy storage and load flexibility, emissions impacts and potential roles of alternative/renewable fuels, and embodied carbon or lifecycle analysis.
The analyst will primarily focus on research as well as technical assistance and energy code and standard development, with some guidance from senior researchers and managers. Analysis will include considerations of building science, engineering, architecture, and market transformation in programs and policies (i.e., federal, state, local, utility). Technical assistance can include actively participating in or facilitating stakeholder meetings, writing memos, presenting ACEEE research, and submitting formal comments. The analyst will have the opportunity to represent ACEEE externally regarding building efficiency and decarbonization as well as support convenings with external stakeholders.
Core Responsibilities:
- Leads technical building analysis and contributes to ACEEE research, publishing technical reports and summarizing findings for non-technical audiences
- Oversees and provides technical assistance to outside stakeholders
- Manages project tasks and corresponds with other project team members
- Collaborates with other ACEEE teams and external partners on multi-sector projects
- Contributes to energy code and standard development, including participating in committee and working group meetings
- Writes blog posts, develops presentations, and speaks at webinars/conferences
Expectations:
- Expertise in building analysis for energy efficient and decarbonized buildings and homes
- Skilled at forming research questions; collecting secondary data and information; writing up findings and formulating recommendations based on findings
- Experience in building-grid interface, load flexibility, thermal energy storage, alternative fuels and/or embodied carbon desired
- Experience with or interest in energy code development and/or equipment efficiency standards is a plus
- Team-oriented with strong interpersonal skills, articulate, and thoughtful
- Ability to participate in and contribute to cross-disciplinary research and teams
- Experience providing technical assistance to programs and policies (federal, state, and/or local)
- Ability to simultaneously manage several complex, fast-paced, multi-partner projects
- Superb organizational and project management skills
- Excellent writing and oral presentation skills
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated passion for clean energy, environmental issues, and social justice
- Experience in analysis relevant to buildings including building science, engineering, architecture, market transformation, and workforce development
- Demonstrated ability to collect and disseminate large amounts of data and information
- Experience with, or sound knowledge of, equity-driven clean energy policies and programs
- Experience facilitating learning across networks or working groups of peer organizations, stakeholders, or representatives from diverse organizations/communities
- Professionalism, poise, and the ability to work as part of a team, maintain a sense of humor, and interact with a diverse array of people, including high-level stakeholders
- Excellent project management skills including facilitation and attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral (including public speaking and presentations)
Required Education and Experience:
- A degree in engineering, architecture, public policy, environmental studies, or another similar field
- Bachelor’s degree and four years of experience, or
- Master’s degree and three years of experience, or
- PhD
- Work experience must include energy efficiency and decarbonization in buildings, energy and environmental policy, or energy policy analysis
Preferred start date: April or May 2024. The position can be located in Washington, DC, or remote.
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Salary range is $63,672 – $79,590. ACEEE’s generous benefits package includes health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance coverage; a 403(b) retirement plan; transportation and bike-share benefits; three weeks of vacation in the first year and four weeks thereafter.
