What can Behavioral Science do for you? Meet BEAR Hub - Free Behavioral Science Support for Programs

May 27, 2025 | 3:00pm - 4:00pm EDT

ACEEE is launching a new free service: BEAR Hub (Behavior | Energy | Action | Research). Through the BEAR Hub, we help transportation, buildings, and industrial efficiency programs turn behavioral insights into action. Whether you’re looking to boost participation, accelerate technology adoption, or overcome other behavior-related barriers, we provide research-backed recommendations to make sustainable energy choices easier. The service is open to cities, states, utilities, program implementers, nonprofits, and anyone running a program to reduce energy consumption.

Join us for a webinar explaining what the new BEAR Hub can do for you. Attendees will be introduced to the staff and advisory board, who will explain what we do, how you can take advantage of these services, and answer any questions you may have. We will also share real-world examples of how BEAR Hub can help programs achieve their goals.

Speakers:

Ashley Whillans, BEAR Hub Advisor and Volpert Family Associate Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School

Dr. Whillans teaches the MBA course "Motivation and Incentives" and conducts research at the intersection of behavioral science, well-being, and sustainability. Her work explores how individuals and organizations can make better decisions about time and money to enhance happiness, productivity, and environmental outcomes. Dr. Whillans has collaborated with organizations and policymakers to design behaviorally informed interventions aimed at promoting sustainable behaviors, such as reducing single-occupancy vehicle commutes and encouraging energy-efficient practices. She also co-led the Behavioral Science practice within the British Columbia provincial government, working to embed behavioral insights into public policy and service delivery.

Beth Karlin, BEAR Hub Advisor and Founder/CEO, See Change Institute

Dr. Karlin is the founder and CEO of See Change Institute, an applied research firm devoted to studying and shaping behavior for the greater good.  She is currently working on projects to train energy managers on behavior, understand and influence electrification, and support community energy programs. Dr. Karlin has published her work in venues ranging from Psychological Bulletin to Peace Studies and is a sought-after speaker and trainer on Storytelling, Smart Homes, and the Social Science of Sustainability (and she loves alliteration). She is a past president of the American Psychological Association’s environmental psychology division, associate editor for Energy Efficiency Journal, and a member of the National Academies of Science Environmental Health Matters Initiative

Moderator: Reuven Sussman, BEAR Hub Director and Director of Behavior, Health and Human Dimensions Program, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE)

Reuven directs BEAR Hub and research on energy efficiency behavior change. He co-chairs the Behavior, Energy and Climate Change conference (BECC). He has authored academic papers and book chapters on the psychology of climate change, behavioral interventions to encourage energy efficiency, and the psychological determinants of pro-environmental behavior. Dr. Sussman has been an advisor for organizations, including the G20, that implement energy efficiency behavior change programs, and has testified before the California legislature and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Reuven is an adjunct professor and member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Victoria (Canada) and sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Environmental Psychology and Journal of Social Psychology
