This paper shows how an environmentally sound transportation policy emphasizing improved vehicle efficiency as well as shifts to alternative transportation modes and renewable fuels can cost-effectively cut transportation–related petroleum use by two-thirds, Co2 emissions by one-half and other air pollution by substantial amounts. It is based on a synthesis of transportation results from America’s Energy Choices and appears as a chapter in Transportation and Global Climate Change.
