In light of new and expanded federal funding opportunities, state and local governments are positioned to expand and deploy new clean energy programs. To support these efforts, ACEEE published Ready to Go: State and Local Efforts Advancing Energy Efficiency. The toolkit was developed using input from internal and external partners to generate a collection of strong efficiency programs at both the state and local level. The resource highlights six guiding principles for governments developing energy efficiency programs, synthesizing lessons learned from these examples. These principles include:

  • Undertaking a rigorous public engagement process

  • Defining multiple benefits, including non-energy benefits

  • Using appropriate data to drive the program

  • Setting goals and maintaining accountability

  • Enhancing program flexibility

  • Maximizing comprehensiveness

Governments are increasingly attempting to address inequities, and federal funding opportunities call for a focus on social equity in program development. The research team centered equity considerations in the guiding principles for program development and in program selection.

This map provides snapshots of the 17 programs featured in the toolkit. To view a state-level program, click on the shaded green state. To view a local program, click on the blue dot.
