About SWEEP: Founded in 2001, the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (or SWEEP) is a nonprofit organization that works to ensure a healthy, equitable, and low carbon future by advancing energy efficiency, electrification, and clean transportation solutions in the southwest states of Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. We achieve these goals through advocacy, research, and education. SWEEP works closely with building departments and sustainability departments, conservation community partners, public utility commissions, state and federal agencies, utilities, clean energy businesses, and national laboratories. Position Description: SWEEP is seeking a full-time Program Associate to join our Buildings Program to advance energy efficiency policy across the Southwestern U.S. We are looking for an individual who has an interest in reducing energy use, climate emissions, and consumer utility bills through building efficiency policies and tools such as the energy codes, benchmarking and building performance standards. The position will report to SWEEP’s Buildings Program Director (who is based in Colorado) and senior program staff while working closely with other SWEEP staff based in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah.

The Program Associate will be working on federally-funded projects that address the adoption and compliance of building energy codes and commercial building benchmarking. Extension of the position beyond one year is contingent upon future project funding.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Stakeholder engagement – Organize, lead, and/or support working groups to achieve changes in policy or programs at the state and local level. Includes planning and leading meetings, as well as producing high-quality presentations, materials, and progress reports.
  • Policy design and development – Support the replication, adaptation, adoption, and expansion of successful state and local policy solutions related to energy-efficient building codes and building electrification.
  • Relationship building – Maintain and grow relationships with state energy officials, local government staff, building officials, building industry representatives, trade associations, and environmental organizations working in building efficiency and decarbonization.
  • Public outreach – Participate in webinars, blogs, and events to represent SWEEP’s mission and build program projects.
  • Working with federal entities such as national laboratories and federal agencies.
  • Project management and administration with projects.

Required Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge & Skills

  • Undergraduate degree and 2+ years of relevant work experience, or 4+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience in energy efficiency and/or building decarbonization policies and programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand technical concepts and speak and write about them clearly and concisely.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to give presentations and convey information to various audiences in both written and verbal form.
  • Ability to take direction and work independently.
  • A team player who likes collaborating with others, including coordinating projects with fellow staff and external stakeholders.
  • Willingness and ability to work in six southwest states with different social, economic, physical, and political environments.
  • Organized, including the ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments.
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills, with a curiosity for evaluating and solving challenging problems.
  • Commitment to SWEEP’s mission to advance energy efficiency, decarbonization, and equity.

Compensation and Benefits: The starting salary range for this full-time, exempt position is between $70,000 to $80,000, depending on experience. SWEEP’s excellent benefits package includes health and dental coverage, a retirement plan with a match, 15 days of vacation and 15 holidays, and paid sick leave and parental leave. A laptop computer, IT support, and a remote office stipend will be provided.
