Division Director, Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division

PNNL is seeking a Director for our Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings (EI&B) Division. The EI&B Division supports the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) research and development mission to sustain American leadership in the transition to a global clean energy economy and to assure the nation’s most critical energy infrastructure is secure and able to recover rapidly from disruptions. 

The EI&B Division is a dynamic, growing organization with over 300 staff organized in five technical groups. The EI&B Division Director will shape a research and development vision and strategy to assure that PNNL addresses DOE’s most important clean energy and electricity infrastructure challenges. The EI&B Director will provide outstanding leadership that advances staff and capability development, diversity and inclusion, and safe operations. 

The EI&B Division’s scientific and technological capabilities include systems engineering and integration; grid and buildings engineered systems; control theory and applications; simulation and modeling; system architecture and design; technology assessment, integration, and deployment; and policy assessment and economic evaluation. The primary technical disciplines represented in this division are mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and economics.

Deploy innovative solutions. Within the Energy and Environment Directorate (EED), the Division Director works closely with market sector managers, who serve as the directorate’s interface to DOE and other stakeholders; with EED’s Chief Science and Technology Officer, who is responsible for PNNL’s discretionary investments in science and technology and for integrated S&T strategy across the Directorate; and with the Division Directors of other research areas. The Division Director is critical in supporting expert delivery, including interfacing with those responsible for managing project risk and execution. Responsibilities. This position reports to the EED Associate Laboratory Director. The Division Director is responsible for leading development of a strategy that will assure that EED institutional capabilities—including staff, facilities, and equipment—play a critical role in meeting the current and future mission needs of DOE and the nation. 

Preferred Qualifications. The preferred candidate will have an advanced degree in one or more of the disciplines represented in the EI&B Division and 15 or more years of progressively responsible leadership, program leadership, or line management experience.

Advanced degree in relevant science or engineering discipline and 13+ years of progressively responsible leadership, program leadership, and line management experience.

Recognized R&D experience in the electricity and/or buildings area and knowledge of the trends and drivers. 

Knowledge and experience working with relevant DOE sponsors, industry, and universities.

Familiarity with R&D areas such as electricity infrastructure, cybersecurity, buildings and connected systems, energy policy and economics, and optimization and controls..

Special/Hazardous Working Conditions or Environment. The position requires approximately 20% domestic travel.
