Welcome to the 2015 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Industry!

Production of goods and materials is energy intensive, but of all sectors of the economy, industries are the best equipped to manage and improve how they use energy. Given the right combination of cost effective technologies, supportive policies and people in plant with the knowledge and time to drive change, some industries are successfully reducing energy use by 20 – 50% or more. The barriers to industrial efficiency are few, and there is an immediate opportunity is to bring these current technologies, policies, and practices to scale in the market in order to harvest the potential of industrial energy efficiency as a least cost energy resource. Looking forward, emerging technologies and creative programs will support smart manufacturing, providing the information backbone for strategic energy management and other corporate sustainability efforts. Sharing information on what is working now and what we are learning as it emerges is the vehicle to get us to and take us beyond best practices.

This 11th biennial Summer Study is bringing together people whose work is advancing technical solutions, corporate commitment, practical skills and innovative programs that reduce the energy intensity of manufacturing. In panel sessions, informal sessions, and collaborative group gatherings, we will discuss issues related to the theme, Energy Efficiency: Integrating Technology, Policy, and People.

The six Summer Study panels are organized around these themes, concentrating on strategic energy management, sustainability, smart manufacturing, policy and resource planning, delivering results and beyond best practices. Paper presentations in the panels feature practical information on each subject area, which will bring forward the learning edge of our individual and organizations’ industrial efficiency efforts. Informal afternoon sessions will enable further exploration and engagement in specific areas of interest. Additionally, the Summer Study provides participants both organized and organic opportunities to network with energy leaders, experts, and decision makers from industry, manufacturing, utilities, academia, government, energy consulting, research, and nonprofit institutions from around the world. These invaluable interactions are key to creating a culture of forward thinking that embraces innovation. But no matter how far you’ve come, or what your reason is for participating, our goal is to provide a high-quality program in a casual forum, and critical knowledge and connections to support and deepen your work in this dynamic field.

We thank the authors, presenters, panel leaders, paper reviewers, funders, Allies, and conference organizers, for their efforts and commitment in creating a program we hope adds value and stimulates forward thinking. We look forward to your participation.
