What kinds of modifications to public policy will induce the changes in decision making that will lead to the adoption of more environmentally benign transportation technologies and practices? Answers to this question were proffered by experts from government, industry, academia, and others at the 1997 Asilomar Conference on Sustainable Transportation Energy Strategies. The included papers cover trends in transportation sector carbon dioxide emissions and experiences with pricing policies in Europe and the U.S.; product revolutions in the automotive industry; the effectiveness of U.S. fuel economy regulations; transition barriers to alternative fuels; and the limitations of land-use policies.
