Efficient Electricity Use: A Development Strategy for Brazil

Author Info By Howard Geller, ACEEE

Details More efficient energy use can have enormous benefits for a developing country. Brazil has one of the most successful and advanced electricity conservation efforts among developing countries, but much remains to be done.

This book describes the progress in electricity conservation in Brazil and the potential for further efficiency improvements. It indicates how implementation of electricity conservation measures can be accelerated, and how those in the U.S. and other countries can help Brazil.

Chapters also cover: technologies for electricity conservation; barriers to implementing more efficient electricity use; electricity conservation policies; industrial structure and electricity use; demand forecasting; and scenarios for future electricity use.

The Brazilian experience provides insights and lessons that are relevant throughout the world. This book is a resource for researchers, analysts and environmental interest groups alike. It was prepared in cooperation with Eletrobrás (Brazil's national electric utility) and the University of São Paulo.

"...one of the most in-depth, up-to-date looks at a developing country's use and misuse of power...[it] yields valuable lessons in how developing countries can boost energy services without plundering the environment or their bank accounts."
