China, the most populous country in the world, is rapidly becoming the largest producer of appliances in the world. This paper reviews the current status and future directions of the Chinese appliance market, focusing on the three types of major home appliances that are sold extensively in China -- refrigerators, clothes washers and room air conditioners. For each appliance, current technologies and future directions are discussed. These discussions show that the Chinese appliance market is dynamic, highly competitive, and increasingly becoming part of the international appliance market.
