FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 29, 2001

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As summer approaches and energy prices edge upward across the country, including price hikes of up to 80% in California's electricity rates, consumers can cut their energy use and save money with high-efficiency air conditioners and other efficient appliances. But where can consumers find reliable, unbiased information quickly?

Up-to-date lists of the most energy-efficient air conditioners--and a range of other appliances-- are now available from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) at http://aceee.org/consumerguide. In addition, the ACEEE site provides a wealth of other energy-saving and cost-cutting resources, including tips from its popular Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings.

"Consumers don't need to feel overwhelmed by debate raging about an 'energy crisis' and what they can do to conserve energy, reduce their bills, and protect our environment," said Jennifer Thorne, co-author of the Consumer Guide. "Replacing an older air conditioner with a new, high-efficiency model, for example, can cut your electricity bill by as much as one-half compared to a typical air conditioner purchased a decade ago."

Consumers who aren't in the market for a new air conditioner can still cut their energy use by following tips from the ACEEE Web site. "Planting shade trees and shrubs around your house, especially on the west side, delaying heat-generating activities such as running your dishwasher until evening on hot days, and keeping your windows and doors closed during the day are just a few steps people can take to stay comfortable while reducing their energy use and their utility bills," added Thorne.

Please tell your readers to check out http://aceee.org/consumerguide. The Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings, 9 th edition is also available through the Web site for $17.95 plus shipping and handling.
