WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Prices for natural gas and heating oil are up
50% or more in many parts of the United States. While the price of fuel is
out of the hands of consumers, there are steps consumers can take to reduce
their bills by conserving energy and reducing fuel consumption.
The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) offers a range
of resources for consumers looking to cut their growing utility
bills and save energy. Up-to-date information on the top-rated energy-efficient
furnaces and boilers can be found on the ACEEE Web site at www.aceee.org/consumerguide.
In addition to listing the top-rated models, the Web site contains
other tips to help consumers identify opportunities for saving money
and energy in the home. The information is derived from ACEEE's
popular Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings.
"Replacing an older furnace with a top-rated energy-efficient model can yield
savings of 20-30%. Consumers with older heating systems should consider replacing
these units with new, highly efficient models, particularly if their existing
system is more than 20 years old," said Jennifer Thorne, an ACEEE Research
Associate and co-author of the Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings.
Consumers who aren't in the market for a new heating system can still cut
their energy use by following tips from the ACEEE Web site. "Sealing air
leaks around doors and windows, getting a heating system tune-up, and installing
a programmable thermostat to turn down the heat overnight or when the house
is unoccupied are simple, inexpensive steps that pay for themselves in less
than one year," added Thorne.
