PACIFIC GROVE, CALIFORNIA -- The American Council for
an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) presented five Champion of Energy
Efficiency Awards at its biennial conference, the Summer Study on
Energy Efficiency in Buildings. These awards recognize leadership
and accomplishment in the energy efficiency field. Winners are selected
based on demonstrated excellence in program implementation, research
and development, energy policy, private sector initiatives, or international
initiatives. The winners for 2004 are:
- Susan
P. Kennedy, Commissioner, California Public Utilities Commission,
for her energy policy leadership in building a strong future for
energy efficiency programs in California. Commissioner Kennedy
has helped not only to increase energy efficiency funding substantially,
but has worked to streamline the administrative structure of California's
utility efficiency programs.
- The Sacramento
Municipal Utility District (SMUD) for its long and consistent
record of success in meeting customer needs and serving the public
good through energy efficiency. SMUD has sustained one of the
nation's strongest commitments to energy efficiency program support
and stands out as one of the nation's best publicly owned utilities
in its efficiency achievements.
- Tom Eckman,
Senior Planner, Northwest Power and Conservation Council,
for his leadership in making energy efficiency a cornerstone of
energy policy in the Pacific Northwest. Tom has directed the development
of several regional energy efficiency planning efforts, which
are examples for the nation in their ambitiousness, solid analysis,
and compelling vision.
- Steve
Cowell, CEO, Conservation Services Group, for his private
entrepreneurship and public citizenship in building one of the
nation's most effective energy efficiency organizations. Steve
has created a thriving business in delivering innovative energy
programs and services, while still finding time to work in the
public interest in support of regional and national energy efficiency
policies.
- The Wisconsin
Energy Conservation Corporation (WECC) for more than two decades
of program innovation and public leadership for energy efficiency
in the Midwest. WECC's work over the years has made energy efficiency
a part of the Wisconsin landscape, helping make the state an efficiency
beacon for the Midwest and beyond.
These winners were nominated by their peers and selected by a
committee of ACEEE's Board of Directors. Selection criteria were
based on the nominee's impact, innovation, and leadership in the
energy efficiency field.
