WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Improvements in motor systems and management can yield significant energy savings, up to 42 percent, according to a recently revised ACEEE reference manual. The book, Energy Efficient Motor Systems: A Handbook on Technology, Program, and Policy Opportunities, was released today by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE).

"While we have made significant progress toward efficient motors since the first edition was released a decade ago," said Steve Nadel, co-author and ACEEE's Executive Director, "our new book demonstrates that these savings are only the tip of the iceberg."

For the past 10 years, the first edition of this book has been the standard reference on motor and motor system efficiency and policy. Many of the current motor programs and policies were built upon its findings and suggestions. The new edition provides a much-needed update that captures the dramatic changes that have occurred in motor technology and markets in recent years. These changes have resulted from technical advances, national minimum-efficiency standards, and 10 years of utility and government motor efficiency programs.

Energy Efficient Motor Systems provides a comprehensive discussion of current motor technologies and standards, system considerations, and motor control technologies. This edition contains an expanded discussion of motor applications such as fans, pumps, and compressed air systems, along with an updated profile of the motor market place, and population, and use. Opportunities for improved motor efficiency are identified and quantified.

"The new edition brings together the answers to many of the motor questions we receive," said Neal Elliott, co-author and ACEEE's Industrial Program Director. "Callers want to know how motors work, how many are in use, how much energy can we save, and how a motor program should be designed to capture this savings potential. We have learned a lot over the past 10 years, but it is hard for most folks to find this information. Having it in one place will be a major asset to the motor efficiency community."

The table of contents of the book, along with selected excerpts, is available at http://aceee.org/motors. The site also contains book links to other important online resources.

Energy Efficient Motor Systems: A Handbook on Technology, Program, and Policy Opportunities (Second Edition) can be ordered for $40 (plus $5 shipping and handling) directly from ACEEE. Trade book distributor inquires should be addressed to Chelsea Green Publishing at 1-800-639-4099. Review copies are available from ACEEE to journalists covering energy, the environment, or motors.
