Appliance and Equipment Standards

RCW § 19.260.010, et seq., Minimum Efficiency Standards

Summary:

Washington enacted its initial appliance efficiency legislation in 2005, creating minimum efficiency standards for twelve products.  Standards for six products were immediately preempted by standards introduced in the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and one other will be preempted by federal standards that become effective in 2009.

In May 2009 Governor Chris Gergoire signed HB 1004, adding efficiency standards for several more products that will become effective January 1, 2010. The adoption or recommendation of additional standards falls is the responsibility of the Energy Policy Division within the State Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development.
