Building Codes

Rhode Island State Energy Codes

Summary:

Both Rhode Island's residential and commercial energy codes are mandatory statewide. Residential buildings must comply with the 2006 IECC. Commercial buildings must also comply with the 2006 IECC, amended to include ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1-2004.

Governor Donald Carcier signed HB 5986 into law on May 14, 2009, requiring the Rhode Island State Building Commission to update the state building code to incorporate the 2009 versions of the IECC and ASHRAE 90.1. The codes are tentatively set to become effective July 2010.
