Smart Growth Policies

Tailpipe Emissions Standards (Low-Emission Vehicle Program)

Summary: The state of New York requires each municipality to create comprehensive plans for local development according to established procedure. Efforts are also being made to encourage inter-municipal cooperation and cooperation between municipalities and state agricultural districts when planning for future development. In 2007, Governor Spitzer created the Smart Growth Cabinet, a multi-agency group that will oversee state agency spending to best promote smart growth land-use practices. In addition, New York recently adopted an explicit VMT reduction target of 10% in 10 years as a means of encouraging more energy-efficient transportation usage.
