Massachusetts State Energy Codes

Summary:

The Massachusetts State Building Code for One- and Two-Family Dwellings (780 CMR) is mandatory statewide and requires compliance with the 2006 IECC and 2007 supplement, or achieve a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) score of 100 or fewer points.

The Massachusetts State Building Code for commercial buildings is mandatory statewide and requires compliance with either the 2006 IECC and 2007 supplement or ASHRAE 90.1-2007.

Massachusetts is required by the Green Communities Act of 2009 to adopt each new IECC edition within one year of its publication. The incorporation of the 2009 IECC will be included in the 8th edition of the Massachusetts Building Code.
