Building Codes

Maine Model Building Energy Code & Commercial Code Standard

Summary:

Maine has no state-wide mandatory residential code, but has a voluntary “Maine Model Building Energy Code” based on the 2003 IECC. Jurisdictions adopting an energy code after July 27, 2005 must adopt the MMBEC, if they are to adopt anything. The MMBEC is slated to be updated in mid-2009, and will go into effect state-wide in 2010.

Maine’s commercial building code is mandatory statewide and meets the 2003 IECC or ASHRAE 90.1 – 2004. The Technical Codes and Standards Board plans on adopting the 2009 IECC on January 1, 2010, effective July 1, 2010.

On April 24, 2008, the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code established the 2009 versions of the IECC and ASHRAE 90.1 as the mandatory building code standards for both residential and commercial construction statewide. The new versions become effective July 1, 2010.
