Building Codes

District of Columbia Building Energy Codes

Summary:

Washington D.C.'s energy codes are mandatory across the District. For residential buildings, builders may use either the 2008 D.C. Construction Codes, which is based on the "30% Solution" and is more stringent than the 2009 IECC, or the previous code adopted in 2003, which is based on the 2000 IECC. For commercial buildings, builders may use either the 2008 D.C. Construction Codes, based on ASHRAE 90.1-2007, or the previous code adopted in 2003, which is based on the 2000 IECC.  The new codes were effective in December 2008, but there is a one-year transition period, meaning that builders must use the 2008 D.C. Construction Codes beginning in December 2009.
