2008 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Industry

Informal Sessions Description

Additional Informal Sessions may be organized on-site during the Summer Study.

Does Early Replacement of Residential Central Air Conditioners Represent A Viable Energy Efficiency Program Opportunity?

John Taylor

Tuesday, August 19
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

In cooperation with the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), the University of Michigan is developing a study to determine the optimal replacement schedules for a typical central air conditioner in order to minimize (1) energy consumption, (2) greenhouse gases emitted, and (3) cost to the consumer in each U.S. climate zone. Similar research has already been done by University of Michigan on clothes washers, refrigerators, and automobiles. The study will also explore how demand side management strategies such as utility incentives for the retirement of older units can cost-effectively encourage consumers to accelerate replacement in a manner that saves energy and reduces peak demand.

During this session, attendees will have an opportunity to learn about previous early replacement programs, share their experiences, and provide input on the forthcoming University of Michigan study.
