Welcome to the 2004 ACEEE Summer Study in Buildings!
August 22-27, 2004 • Asilomar Conference Center • Pacific Grove, California

Join us for the 12th biennial ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings. A diverse group of energy efficiency professionals from around the world will gather at this preeminent meeting to discuss the technological basis for, and practical implementation of, improving energy use in buildings. Presentations and discussions will related to the theme, "Breaking Out of the Box." Since the field of energy efficiency is now nearly 30 years old, but still in a process of evolution and discovery, the 2004 Summer Study affords an unparalleled opportunity to take a step back to reflect on where we have been, identify the best of what works and why, and to seek advice from the most innovative minds both inside and outside of our profession on what might be next. By "Breaking Out of the Box" of our own preconceptions, we are hopeful that this Summer Study will challenge all of us to new and greater achievements in our chosen field—all while having an enjoyable time in a collegial setting. To launch the dialog, there will be four new panel topics, including one that is specifically designed to promote an exchange of innovative ideas and spirited debate. Topics will include:

  • technologies, design, and performance of buildings
  • market transformation
  • program design, implementation, and evaluation
  • human and social dimensions of energy use
  • regulation and deregulation of the utility industry
  • efficient buildings in efficient communities
  • energy and environmental policies
  • technology showcase
  • display presentations
  • NEW!
  • four new panels including debate and roundtable sessions
  • new housing process
  • new registration options

The conference promotes the interaction among the participants through a balance of structured and unstructured sessions. Refereed papers are presented in the mornings, informal and display sessions in the afternoons, and plenary sessions in the evenings.
