Session Synopsis - "Opportunities in High Performance Healthcare Buildings"

Tengfang (Tim) Xu, LBNL
Charlie Middleton, PG&E
Chris Scruton, CEC

Tuesday, August 24
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

National healthcare spending growth is projected to significantly increase in terms of dollars, as well as a share of GDP over the current decade (e.g., 1,100 billion dollars in 2000, and is projected to be more than doubled in 2010). There are unique opportunities in energy management and contamination control in healthcare buildings including hospitals. Emerging technologies, information, tools, guidelines, and regulations will significantly affect how well the healthcare buildings perform and serve the society. This session is intended to provide a forum for exchanging knowledge and discussing R&D opportunities to achieve high performance healthcare buildings. Topics for discussion will include baseline information, R&D needs and challenges in emerging technologies, energy management, security, and contamination control for healthcare buildings in the 21st century.
