Session
Synopsis - "Energy Savings Accounting Today's Business Requirements"
Dennis J. Nelson, BC Hydro
Monday, August 23
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Utility information
and planning needs are much more complex now than they were in the
1990s, and BC Hydro's Power Smart group has been working through
these internal reporting challenges for the last four years. The
introduction to this session (and an accompanying background paper)
suggest approaches for reporting (and more importantly forecasting)
energy savings so that all stakeholders, both inside and outside
the organization, can understand and use the information. Concepts
of run rate vs. acquired energy; energy vs. demand savings; gross
vs. net savings; system losses adjustments; timeframes and forecast
views; and two types of savings persistence will be discussed. With
common and understood energy accounting practices, benchmarking
between utilities would be feasible. EIA terminology and the associated
reporting challenges will be addressed. The goal is to provide a
context for the discussion, have attendees describe their tracking/reporting
environments, and then determine what participants' utilities/agencies
are doing to improve the usability of energy savings forecasts.
For participants who are interested, a separate but closely related
session on benchmarking, is planned for the Tuesday afternoon.
