Session Synopsis - "Development of a Utility Star Program"

Jim Parks, SMUD

Monday, August 23
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Utilities do not always have green reputations, but many are moving that direction. If a green rating could be developed for utilities, the impact could be huge. As a strawman, I am proposing that a utility rating system be developed that would incorporate green procurement policies and construction practices, commitment to energy efficiency, renewables and pollution reduction, improvements in recycling and other elements TBD. Ratings may be similar to LEED - silver, gold, platinum - or whatever method is developed by the team. A utility board or governing body could set a Utility Star goal which would promote increases in energy efficiency and renewables and improvements in procurement practices, etc. The purpose of this meeting is to determine interest in developing such a rating and to identify the next steps.
