2004 ACEEE Informal Sessions Descriptions

Additional Informal Sessions may be organized on-site during the Summer Study. Visit the office in Surf and Sand to sign up for an Informal Session.

Session Synopsis - "Efforts to Improve Desktop Computer Efficiency and the Role for Utilities and Market Transformation Organizations "

Sam Sirkin, Ecos Consulting
Phil Degens, Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance
Jeff Harris, Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance

Monday, August 23
4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Most past efforts to improve desktop computer efficiency have focused on putting the machines into a sleep mode after a period of inactivity. This capability is widely offered by manufacturers and supported by Windows and ENERGY STAR, but current research indicates that less than 10% of office computers enable this energy-saving feature. A new, complementary opportunity is emerging that automatically improves computer efficiency across all operating modes: power supplies, the devices that convert high voltage alternating current (ac) to low voltage direct current (dc) for use by the microprocessor and other integrated circuits. This session will discuss efforts underway to improve desktop computer efficiency, and how utilities and market transformation organizations are supporting them.
