2003 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Industry
Informal Sessions Description
Additional Informal Sessions may be organized on-site during the
Summer Study.
Session
Synopsis - "Strategies and Technologies to Enhance Industrial
Peak Shaving"
Bill Reinhardt, NYSERDA
Thursday, July 31
3:30 PM - 5:00 PM
In some parts of the country, such as California and New York,
the two issues of electricity price and availability have created
renewed interest in industrial peak shaving. Compared to the current
situation for industrial energy efficiency, relatively little is
known and/or available about industrial peak shaving opportunities.
How does an industrial energy manager find engineering firms (or
others) with expertise in peak shaving strategies that optimize
the use of new technology with available alternative rates? What
case studies are available for a given industry? Have utilities
or others performed market assessments to identify those industry
groups with the greatest opportunities and incentives for undertaking
load management? Has anyone performed market segmentation studies
to identify the best industry sectors for such load management technologies
as:
- load shifting
technologies such as thermal energy storage or electrical storage
systems,
- fuel switching
options such as electricity to natural gas for cooling or compressed
air,
- very energy
efficient electrotechnologies that enhance productivity while
reducing electricity use on- and off-peak, and
- distributed
generation to reduce peak demand on the utility grid?
In New York, these questions have all been raised as stakeholders
direct more attention to the issue of industrial peak shaving. There
is a great need to find answers to these questions, organize the
information that is available and disseminate the information to
stakeholders in such a form as to stimulate action to reduce electricity
costs for industry. Success will not only benefit industry but all
electricity consumers as wholesale market prices are reduced.
At this informal session I propose to discuss these and related
questions brought to the table by other session attendees, identify
common issues and interests, and discuss areas for future collaboration
and communication.
