2003 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Industry
Informal Sessions Description
Additional Informal Sessions may be organized on-site during the Summer
Study.
Session
Synopsis - "Tool Development for Industrial Energy Efficiency"
Jim Quinn, U.S. Dept. of Energy
Wednesday, July 30
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Software tools for improving industrial energy efficiency within a plant
have been developed or is in the process of being developed by the
Department of Energy and its partners. A brief synopsis of these tools,
typical benefits, and current tool delivery will be provided. This suite
of tools is now widely used, and a study by Oak Ridge National Laboratory
estimated that energy savings of over 35 trillion btus was realized in
2002. In concert with its partners, the DOE/Office of Industrial
Technologies is currently examining a variety of issues which have been
raised, such as the value of integrating these tools into a "tool suite",
the needs for additional tools to improve energy savings, the utilization
of industry and trade group champions to disseminate tools and expand the
user base, and new methods for training which can facilitate a wider
audience. This session will provide a forum to discuss these issues and
future directions for development and delivery of industrial energy
efficiency tools.
