2003 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Industry
Informal Sessions Description
Additional Informal Sessions may be organized on-site during the Summer
Study.
Session
Synopsis - "Data Center Research - Next Steps"
William Tschudi, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Thursday, July 31
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
In 2001, a group of distinguished energy efficiency
advocates met in an informal session at the ACEEE conference
and enthusiastically endorsed the idea of understanding data
center energy use and beginning steps to improve
efficiency. Since that time LBNL and others including
University of Maryland, Georgia Tech, and Rocky Mountain
Institute (RMI) have engaged the industry and progress has
been made. A roadmap has been developed for future public
interest energy research for data centers in California.
This session will be an open forum to discuss the next steps
for tracking data center load, improving data center
efficiency, barriers to be overcome, and possible directions
for large computing centers.
