2003 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Industry

Informal Sessions Description

Additional Informal Sessions may be organized on-site during the Summer Study.

Session Synopsis - "Cool Thermal Energy Storage: Opportunities for New York State Plastics Fabricators"

Ron Cascone, Nexant, Inc.

Wednesday, July 30
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

  • New York State has over 450 plastics fabrication facilities, concentrated primarily in the Northwest and Long Island / Downstate Regions, but also in the Central and Capital Regions. About 90 are large, with an estimated total revenue of $1.6 billion. Other states, such as California, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, etc. have similar or larger size plastics fabrication sectors. Thermoplastics molding uses mainly extruder frictional heat to melt the polymer, and needs to immediately take it out with chilled water, air, or glycol media. TES technology has been used to peak-shave and reduce capital costs in commercial and industrial mechanical cooling systems, but also can make "negawatts" in a 24/7 operation with more level loads. Plastics fabricators are generally not utilizing TES - many options enable retrofits, but encapsulated systems are particularly attractive. Not commonly understood, TES is also a demonstrated net energy conservation measure. TOU rates, and other DSM and GHG reduction programs would all apply to benefit the operator and society.

  • What are the impediments for implementation?
    • Ignorance of TES and/or of benefits?
    • Capital formation?
    • Inertia?

  • Who and what are enablers (existing and potential)?
