2002 ACEEE Informal Sessions Descriptions

Additional Informal Sessions may be organized on-site during the Summer Study. Visit the office in Surf and Sand to sign up for an Informal Session.

Session Synopsis - "PIER Residential R&D Advances: Refrigerators, Hot Water & Radiant Floor Systems"

Mark Berman, Davis Energy Group

Thursday, August 22
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Davis Energy Group is progressing on four R&D projects under its Synergistic Water Heating Distribution and Technologies (SWHDT) Program. This Program is funded by the California Energy Commission through the PIER Program. This session will:

  1. Describe progress toward the development of a Combined Refrigerator Electric Water Heater. A design configuration has been selected and prototype design is proceeding with assistance from Oak Ridge National Laboratories and input from Maytag.
  2. Describe testing of the Condensate Recovery System for heat pump water heaters completed by TIAX (formerly Arthur D. Little).
  3. Present results to date of a study by Oak Ridge National Laboratories to compare the efficiencies of alternative residential hot water distribution systems.
  4. Describe progress on the development of a radiant floor tubing system that can be rapidly deployed at low cost. The objective of this project is to make radiant floor tubing systems affordable for production housing. A design configuration has been selected, and Davis Energy Group is working with ITEX, Inc. to develop a prototype.
