Session
Synopsis - "Zero Energy Buildings"
Lew Pratsch, U.S. DOE
Monday, August 19
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
America's new homes and buildings can produce as much energy as they use within the next decade. These buildings will be affordable, durable healthy, productive and more comfortable. This is the basis of a vision statement that the Department of Energy developed in partnership with industry in late 2001. The Zero Energy Buildings (ZEB) program facilitates the whole building optimization and integration of advanced energy efficiency and onsite renewable energy generation technologies never before considered for mainstream construction. The ultimate benefits of Zero Energy Homes and many Zero Energy Commercial Buildings will be to achieve Zero (Net) Energy use, Zero Summer Electric Peak Load, Zero Emissions, Zero Utility Bill, and Zero User Complaints. This session will discuss ZEB activities such as design/build efforts with major homebuilders, possible R&D technology pathways, and recommendations from session participants.
