Session Synopsis - "Energy in Water and Waste Water Exploration"

Ed Wisniewski, CEE
Neal Elliott, ACEEE

Thursday, August 22
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Water and wastewater treatment facilities are ubiquitous throughout the country, providing clean, drinking water for municipalities and industrial facilities, and treating municipal and industrial wastewater to preserve the quality of waterways and aquifers. Water and wastewater facilities are energy intensive, one of the largest and most energy intensive loads owned and operated by local governments, accounting for 35% of energy used by municipalities. Electricity use in water and wastewater treatment and distribution in the United States is estimated to cost over $6.5 billion annually, with savings of 15% readily achievable (ASE 2002). As indicated below, water and wastewater consume over 54,000 GWh/yr (or 54 billion kWh/yr.).

The objective of this informal session is to explore opportunities to realize energy savings in the water and wastewater sector through coordination and development of public benefit-funded programs. Neal Elliott of ACEEE and Ed Wisniewski of CEE will be organizing this informal session and leading discussion. Those participating in the session are encouraged to contribute their program experiences and insights with regard to the topic areas below.

  • Identify Supply Side and End-Use Savings Opportunities
  • Identify Key Systems to Target
  • Identify Key End Uses to Target
  • Identify Regulatory Trends/Important Movements
  • Identify Key Market Drivers
  • Identify Standard Business Models
  • Key Organizations/Potential Partnerships (e.g., Industry Leaders, Associations, etc.)
  • Identify Key Resources
