Session
Synopsis - "Funding Energy Efficiency: Can Improved Messaging Help?"
Kevin Blake, ICF Consulting, Inc.
Tracy Narel, USEPA
Monday, August 19
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Capital budgeting in many firms is a byzantine process that can leave energy managers frustrated, especially if they feel they cannot speak to their manager's financial goals. This session will explore how expanded financial messaging may offer new and more successful opportunities for energy managers to fund their projects. Using targeted business sector messages and profitability metrics, along with corporate-level bottom-line metrics, Energy Star is working with its corporate Partners to create new approaches for selling energy efficiency that corporate managers respond to more readily. The objective of this initiative is to better position energy managers so that they can be more successful in securing funding. The emerging approach emphasizes how the use of standard financial concepts like Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return can be complemented with concepts such as changes in Earnings Per Share and percent contribution to annual earnings growth targets. These latter concepts roll project-level financial returns up to the corporate level and translate these returns into metrics readily understood by corporate management -- i.e., shareholder value. Discussion during this session will emphasize audience participation in order to facilitate an exchange of real-world experiences and examples of successful messaging.
