Appliance
Standards
Appliance and
equipment efficiency standards have been one of the most successful
policies used by state governments and the federal government to
save energy. Appliance and equipment efficiency standards prohibit
the production and import or sale of appliances and other energy-consuming
products less efficient than the minimum requirements. These standards
not only save energy but also reduce pollutants, improve electric
system reliability, and save consumers and business owners significant
amounts of money over the life of the equipment. Standards help
to assure a level playing field by eliminating products with burdensome
operating costs and hastening the development of innovations that
bring improved performance.
Activities
- Researching
New Opportunities for Efficiency Standards
ACEEE continues to advocate cost-effective new standards on a
wide range of products at the state and federal level. Current
areas of emphasis include commercial lighting, residential furnaces
and boilers, commercial air conditioners, transformers and a range
of as-yet unregulated electronics and residential and commercial
appliances. Often states provide a testing ground for new standards
that are later adopted nationally. Our "Leading
the Way" blue cover series highlights the greatest opportunities
for states.
- Contributions
to State and Federal Energy Legislation and Rulemakings
ACEEE played an instrumental role in the development of national
appliance standards as they have been adopted at the state level
and then by the U.S. Congress in 1987, 1988, 1992 and 2005. As
laws and regulations are implemented, ACEEE tracks developments
participates at each stage of the process, working closely with
other stakeholders to arrive at consensus decisions when possible.
- The
Appliance Standards Awareness Project (ASAP)
ASAP is dedicated to increasing awareness of and support for appliance
and equipment efficiency standards. Founded in 1999 by the American
Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), the Alliance
to Save Energy, and the Natural Resources Defense Council, ASAP
provides advice and technical support to parties interested in
advancing state standards. The ASAP Web site provides the latest
updates and resources on appliance efficiency standards rulemakings
at the state and federal level.
