Departmental Overview

The Energy Institute at Haas promotes research and curricular programs on energy
business, policy and technology commercialization. The goal of EI@Haas is to bridge
the gap between the frontiers of economic and scientific energy research and the
marketplace. Specifically, EI @ Haas is active in the following three areas:

* Education: EI @ Haas trains the business and policy leaders of tomorrow to
understand the market, policy, and technological challenges of the energy
industries.
* Analysis: EI @ Haas strives to ensure that energy and environmental policy is
based on sound economic and business principles, backed by rigorous empirical
evidence and the frontiers of economic research.
* Commercialization: EI @ Haas works with scientists to commercialize promising
energy technologies, being mindful of the unique scientific and policy issues they
will confront.

Responsibilities

The Executive Director will report to the Faculty Directors of EI@Haas. The
Executive Director will play an integral role in carrying out the Institute's
three-part mission, though his or her primary focus will be the curricular and
analytical activities (the first two bullets in the list above).

The Executive Director will be responsible for fostering activities within the
Institute as well as working collaboratively with other energy and environmental
programs around the UC Berkeley campus. The Executive Director is also expected to
form alliances with external constituencies from the business and policy domains and
to fundraise.

Specifically, the Executive Director will pursue activities in the following two
broad categories:

Curriculum Development and Teaching (35%)
* Assist the Faculty Directors in developing and coordinating the energy curriculum
for MBAs and undergraduates at the Haas School of Business, by finding lecturers to
teach existing courses and developing new courses, including new electives that fit
within the Haas School's Berkeley Innovative Leader Development (BILD) experiential
learning framework.
* Supervise student-led courses and projects.
* Teach at least one course per year. Good fits include a course on energy project
development and finance, an experiential course that engages students in consulting
projects for corporations and policymakers, or a course on corporate sustainability
practices.

Research, Outreach and Fundraising (65%)
* Engage in applied analysis of energy and environmental issues to support the
business and policy communities, including writing white papers, submitting
testimony or developing grant proposals for state or federal agencies.
* Represent EI@Haas by speaking at conferences and meeting with business and policy
leaders.
* Organize EI@Haas-led conferences and other outreach activities.
* Working in collaboration with the Faculty Directors and others, develop and
maintain a high-caliber network of executives, policymakers and thought leaders to
serve as an Advisory Board to assist in institute planning and fundraising.
* Explore and develop fundraising opportunities from private foundations, federal
or state grant programs and private and corporate donors.

Required Qualifications

* Ability to understand and communicate with practitioners about energy and
environmental economics and policy research. Preference will be given to candidates
with a demonstrated history of, and appreciation for, commissioned and/or
independent research.
* Experience developing curriculum and teaching at the graduate level.
* Demonstrated ability to build and launch innovative programs.
* Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines with program/center managers,
staff, students and faculty on campus-wide energy initiatives.
* Ability to interact and achieve results with a broad, diverse community of
business leaders, funding agencies, and media.
* Ability to develop partnerships with collaborating institutions and firms.
Experience in developing and maintaining networks of business people and
policymakers who can contribute to curricular and extracurricular university
programs.
* Expert oral and written communication skills.
* Knowledge of fundraising and development campaigns.

Education and Training

* Masters level or higher degree. There is a strong preference for a candidate
with a PhD and/or an advanced degree in economics, finance or a related area.
* 5 years of senior-level experience as a professional or consultant in the energy
industry.
* Teaching experience.

Other Information

This is an exempt position which has been classified by the university as an
Academic Program Management Officer 4.

This position requires approximately 10% domestic travel.
