ACEEE JOINS LIGHTING EFFICIENCY COALITION
On March 14, ACEEE joined Philips Lighting, The Alliance to Save Energy, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Earth Day Network, and California Citizens Against Waste in a new Lighting Efficiency Coalition. The coalition’s goal is to achieve a major leap in lighting energy efficiency over the next 10 years for the most common light bulbs used today, as well as for lighting used in commercial and industrial technologies.
ACEEE estimates that of the 1.5 billion general-service screw-in bulbs sold each year, less than 10% are compact fluorescents. The coalition expects that compact fluorescent and high-efficiency incandescent/halogen technology will be the main technologies used in the early years of this shift, but that light-emitting diode (LED) lamps will also come into the market during the 10-year period.
While specifics are still under development, the economic and environmental benefits from this initiative could be substantial. As much as $18 billion in annual electricity bill savings and over 158 million tons of annual carbon dioxide emissions could be reached by the end of the 10-year period.
