REFLECTIONS ON THE 2005 "INDUSTRY" SUMMER
STUDY
This year's Summer Study
on Energy Efficiency in Industry attracted a diverse group of
250 energy professionals, including many from the industry sector
and many from abroad, who discussed efficiency as a cost management
strategy. In addition, they focused on energy productivity, non-energy
benefits (which can be anywhere from 30 to 100 percent of anticipated
energy savings), and international competitiveness. Interestingly,
the concept of sustainability (the theme of the 2003 Summer Study)
has now become broadly accepted as an organizing principle by most
large companies.
The 2005 Summer Study was held July 19-22 at West Point, New York
and featured the theme "Cutting the High Cost of Energy". Nearly
100
peer-reviewed papers were presented and are packaged in CD-ROM.
This year's conference represents the sixth that was held in New
York State in cooperation with NYSERDA.
The theme and program were developed by the conference Co-Chairs
Miriam Pye from NYSERDA
and Gordon Slack of the Dow
Chemical Company.
ACEEE named three Champions of
Energy Efficiency in Industry at the Summer Study. They are
Peter Salmon-Cox, USDOE (retired), Fred Schoeneborn who directed
Mobil Corporation's energy management program, and EnSave, Inc.
which designs energy conservation and pollution prevention programs
in the U.S. agricultural sector.
